The South African Renewable Energy Masterplan lays out how the country will manufacture, assemble, service and deploy the technologies ‘that will define the next century.’ The South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM) is “the ignition of an economy” and a signal to manufacturers, investors, workers and communities in South Africa that the energy transition must now move into implementation. Approved by Cabinet in March 2025, SAREM was officially launched last week on 12 June at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. SAREM is underpinned by targets and strategic interventions, including: Increasing the pace of rolling out renewable energy projects Creating jobs and expanding local manufacturing Industrial development through localisation Supporting a Just Energy Transition. Launch of SAREM a call to action Delivering the opening remarks ahead of a panel discussion African Renewable Energy Masterplans: Inclusive industrial Development Plans for the Renewable Energy and Storage Value Chains, Samantha Graham-Maré, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy said the plan signals a shift from planning to delivery, with industrialisation at its core. “It really is a pleasure for me to be here today at what is both a turning point and a launchpad. Not only for South Africa’s energy future, but for our economy, our industrial capacity and our role in shaping a new energy architecture across the continent.” She said SAREM was not just a plan, but “the ignition of an economy.” “For South Africa, this comes at a moment of deep urgency. We’re still recovering from the energy crisis that exposed the fault lines in our electricity system. “Loadshedding wasn’t just an inconvenience. It was a systemic break on development, which holds back job creation, investment, and the most basic functions of daily life.” |
