China Communications Country Limited (CCCC) has begun construction of the 70 MW Enesolar-3 solar plant in Nicaragua, which will supply power to the state-owned water utility Enacal and cover approximately 40% of its electricity needs. The photovoltaic project is the countrys largest to date. Construction of a 70 MW solar project is underway in Nicaragua. The Enesolar-3 solar plant, located in the town of Nindirí, in the Masaya department of western Nicaragua, will be the countrys largest solar installation to date. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which is being led by China Communications Country Limited (CCCC), was held earlier this month. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months. Once operational, it will supply power to Nicaraguas state-owned water company, Enacal, generating enough electricity to cover approximately 40% of its annual consumption and supporting improvements in the provision and sanitation of water services. The Enesolar-3 project, approved last year and supported by Chinese government funding earlier this year, is one of three solar plants that China Communications Construction is building in Nicaragua. Together, the projects will have a combined capacity of nearly 200 MW. During the opening ceremony, company president Gan Xingqiu noted that the 61 MW Enesolar AP-AS 1 project in San Isidro is entering its final construction phase, while the 67.35 MW El Hato project in Ciudad Darío is currently under development. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Nicaragua had installed 36 MW of solar power by the end of 2024, up from 18 MW a year earlier. Three solar plants are the 12 MW Solaris, in operation since 2017; the 1.4 MW La Trinidad, which opened in 2013; and the 16 MW El Jaguar , which opened last year. |
