Work Detail In Chile, a 150 MW/750 MWh BESS project is being submitted for environmental assessment.Chiles Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA) has approved the Remanso project for its assessment. This project involves the construction and operation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in the municipality of Rancagua, Cachapoal province, in the Libertador General Bernardo OHiggins region. The initiative, with an estimated investment of $165 million, provides for a 150 MW injection capacity and a total storage capacity of 750 MWh, enabling the delivery of energy for five continuous hours during periods of peak demand. The infrastructure will be developed over a 4.9-hectare area and will consist of 160 lithium-ion battery containers distributed across 40 transformer stations. As described in the environmental impact statement submitted by Orion Power, these stations will house the inverters and transformers needed to increase the voltage and connect the system to the 23/154 kV Step-Up Substation. Connection to the National Electric System will be via a 65-meter high-voltage line, connecting to the Punta Cortés substation. It also specifies that the projects objective is to store surplus energy from the National Electric System during low-demand periods and reinject it into the same interconnection point during peak consumption periods. This operation seeks to improve the efficiency and stability of the electricity grid and facilitate supply and demand management in the central-southern region of the country. The projected useful life for Remanso is 31 years and 8 months, with a 10-month construction phase, 30 years of operation, and 10 months for closure or abandonment. The schedule considers the creation of up to 60 direct jobs during the construction phase and between 5 and 10 during operation. The infrastructure also includes monitoring, control, protection, fire detection, and air conditioning systems in each battery container. It is stated that the choice of location responds to technical and economic criteria, since the selected land is close to the Punta Cortés substation and the main energy demand centers of Rancagua.
