Work Detail Isokangas BESS to support grid near Aurora Line interconnector ECO STOR is developing a 50MW/1hr battery energy storage system (BESS) in central Finland following a final investment decision by the project’s shareholders. The Isokangas project is being built near Uleåborg, close to major wind generation zones and adjacent to a Fingrid substation linked to the 380km Aurora Line—an interconnector jointly developed by the Finnish and Swedish TSOs. Construction has already begun, with commissioning expected in 2026. The Norwegian company will co-own and manage the project, with Norway-based utility Å Energi as the largest shareholder. Other backers include investment firm Farvatn and Finnish energy storage company AmpTank. The fully funded project will offer flexibility services to the Finnish grid and includes optionality for future expansion to a 2hr system. The land lease runs until 2039, with options to extend. “ECO STOR AS have experience from both behind the meter and grid scale BESS projects, and we are excited to apply this know-how to build and operate the Isokangas project,” said Dr Trygve Burchardt, CEO of ECO STOR. “The Finnish BESS market is expanding, supported by high expected growth of onshore wind and solar power,” he added. ECO STOR will oversee project delivery and core functions, supported by subcontractors. The company provides battery storage systems ranging from small-scale behind-the-meter setups to large utility projects using both new and second-life batteries. In 2024, ECO STOR sold its German grid-scale BESS subsidiary and pipeline to Brookfield-backed X-ELIO and Nature Infrastructure Capital.
