Work Detail The Buenos Aires City government is moving forward with an ambitious plan to refurbish cobblestone streets in various neighborhoods. Through the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, 19 paving projects have already been completed, and another 12 are underway. In total, 88 blocks will be renovated, distributed in Caballito, Belgrano, Chacarita, Flores, Villa Urquiza, Núñez, and other areas with protected urban heritage. Of the citys more than 30,000 blocks, approximately 3,800 still have cobblestones. Approximately half of these streets are protected as heritage sites, which prevents their replacement with modern pavements. The goal of this program is to preserve the historical value of these roadways, which also contribute to reducing vehicle speeds and allow for better water absorption compared to asphalt. The technical work consists of removing the asphalt patches placed during previous interventions, removing the paving stones, leveling and compacting the base, and replacing the original material. Repaving allows us to properly maintain these types of streets without disturbing the historic material, explained Minister of Public Space Ignacio Baistrocchi. This type of intervention not only responds to urban conservation criteria but is also part of a more sustainable approach to road design, especially in residential or low-traffic areas, where the goal is to discourage the passage of large vehicles.
