Rosarios Islas Malvinas International Airport will suspend operations for approximately three months due to major renovations on its main runway. This operation will temporarily shut down the main airport in the province of Santa Fe, significantly impacting regional connectivity. Given this situation, the provincial government has proposed the Sauce Viejo Airport as a temporary replacement for domestic and international flights. The initiative was announced by Santa Fes Secretary of Tourism, Marcela Aeberhard, who reported that a formal request had been submitted to the National Secretary of Tourism, Daniel Scioli, and that Aerolíneas Argentinas support had also been requested. The goal is to maintain the flight network operational during the closure of Rosario and, at the same time, take advantage of the opportunity to reposition Sauce Viejo as a strategic air hub for the north-central part of the province. The proposal seeks to maintain connectivity not only in the city of Rosario, but also in a vast area that includes more than one million inhabitants. The Sauce Viejo terminal, located on the outskirts of the capital, has infrastructure that has been modernized in recent years and could be adapted to handle increased frequencies and eventually operate international flights, if the corresponding services are enabled by the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) and Immigration. The work on the Rosario airport runway responds to critical operational needs. The project, which includes resurfacing, reinforcing structural layers, and upgrading signage and beacons, seeks to raise safety standards and extend the life of the takeoff and landing corridor. Due to its magnitude, it will be necessary to completely shut down air operations at the terminal while the work is being carried out. The tourism and commercial aviation sectors welcomed the proposal as a viable and strategic alternative, provided the necessary technical adjustments are made in Sauce Viejo and logistical connectivity is guaranteed. This opportunity could also lead to a strengthening of airport infrastructure in the city of Santa Fe, with a positive medium-term impact on the regional economy. |
