Work Detail The data is part of the 2025 National Energy Balance, which shows for the first time the impact of the electrification of the Brazilian fleet on electricity consumption, with demand reaching 309 GWh last year. Another highlight of the report is that distributed solar photovoltaic micro and mini-generation in Brazil will reach 41,006 GWh of electricity generation in 2024, representing 5.6% of total electricity generation in the country. Brazils electricity grid will reach 88.2% renewable energy in 2024, highlighting the growth in the share of wind and solar photovoltaic generation, which together accounted for 24% of total electricity generation last year. This figure is part of the National Energy Balance Synthesis Report 2025 (base year 2024), released by the Energy Research Corporation (EPE). Among the information on energy supply and consumption, the report highlights that distributed micro and mini-generation solar photovoltaic in Brazil will reach 41,006 GWh of electricity generation in 2024, representing 5.6% of total electricity generation in the country last year. The energy mix, which includes fuel consumption, reached 50% renewable sources last year, primarily due to the continued supply of hydropower and sugarcane biomass, in addition to the growth of sources such as black liquor, biodiesel, wind power, and solar photovoltaic. This is the highest level of renewable sources in Brazils electricity mix since 1989. Electrification and consumption by sector The report includes an analysis of energy consumption across economic sectors. In the industrial sector, for example, a 1.4% increase in energy consumption was observed compared to 2023. This trend was primarily driven by the rise in the use of electricity (4.1%), which surpassed sugarcane bagasse as the sectors main source of energy. Industrial consumption of mineral coal and derivatives also increased by 3.5%, and of firewood and charcoal by 2.1%. Meanwhile, fuel oil consumption in industry fell by 17.4%. Overall, energy consumption in the industrial sector reached 64.4% from renewable sources. According to the released report, the transportation sector saw a 2.7% increase in renewable energy consumption in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 25.7% from renewable sources. This result was primarily driven by a 30.1% increase in hydrated ethanol consumption and a 19.3% increase in biodiesel consumption. Still related to biofuels, the document noted that domestic ethanol production increased by 2.8% compared to 2023, with emphasis on the increased share of corn as a raw material in the production of this energy, which reached 20% of the total production in 2024. As a novelty, the document presents for the first time the electricity consumption resulting from the growing share of electrified vehicles in road transport. By 2024, Brazil will reach 215,300 registrations and 309 GWh of electricity consumption from electrified vehicles. Emissions associated with energy Last year, emissions associated with Brazils energy mix reached 431.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2 eq). Almost half, or 214.3 MtCO2 eq, were generated in the transportation sector. In terms of emissions per capita, each Brazilian producing and consuming energy in 2024 emitted an average of 2.0 t CO2 eq. The Brazilian electricity sector emitted only 59.9 kg CO2 eq in 2024 to produce 1 MWh. This rate is considered very low, approximately four times lower than that observed in European OECD countries, four times lower than that observed in the United States (US), and up to 10 times lower than the reference for China. Nearly 70% of Brazils greenhouse gas emissions are concentrated in the Agriculture and Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) sectors, while emissions from the Energy sector accounted for 20.5% of the total inventoried in 2022.
