Jan 2025 Intervention Sector(s): Gender issues, Labor & Livelihoods Remuneration range: > 6000 (USD) Duration of Contract: Three months In light of the ongoing crisis and recent influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) into the Akkar region, along with the impact of the nearby conflict on the northern Lebanese economy, its crucial to address the unique challenges facing this area. The arrival of IDPs has intensified pressure on already strained resources, exacerbating economic hardships in Akkar. The conflicts repercussions have disrupted local trade, tourism, and employment, leaving many residents and newcomers alike in urgent need of support. Sustainable, community-focused interventions especially menstrual hygiene related interventions are essential to bolster economic resilience and support the livelihoods of both host communities and displaced populations, and addressing period poverty. Thus,Plan International Lebanon and Akkarouna aim to conduct a market assessment in Akkar governorate, specifically Al-Mehamra, Bebnine, Berkayel, Halba, Borj Al Arab, Miniara and Arqa areas, which involves collecting quantitative and qualitative data on various aspects such as market trends, consumer preferences, supply and demand patterns, competition, implication of the displacement over local production and key commodities, and the potential for growth in specific areas Akkar. Given the focus on green investment and climate change as a cross cutting issue under this project, the market assessment will also emphasize sectors relevant to the green transition. This information will be invaluable in identifying sectors with high growth potential and ample opportunities for job creation. Consultations with private sector actors will aid in: Identify skills and training gaps in the market, The market scan should adequately address gender issues including having a specific gender related indicator to measure progress and impact as well as identify the current situation in the labour market (for eg understanding the current situation and cultural perception of working women in these communities including trending jobs, barriers to market, etc. Map market actors, entrepreneurs, potential value chains and financial service providers Identify actors influencing workforce development and employability activities such as determining which vocational training courses will provide job seekers with skills being sought after by local employers, especially those who are supportive of women in the workforce Map vacancies and Identify available job and internship opportunities for Lebanese and Syrian women over 18 in sectors permitted by the Ministry of Labor specifically for refugees. Note: prioritize sewing as the primary option, as it plays a key role in the reusable pads project, along with 3-4 other promising sectors as key areas of focus. Provide aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with concrete information about market opportunities and promising market entry points considering a gender lens To identify the potential of applying a gender transformative approach within the institutions, and private sector + focus groups/ survey on the acceptability for girls and women of using reusable sanitary products in the Akkar region.
