Network Infrastructure – Next Generation Firewall. The Center For Information, Media And Communication Technology (Zimk) Is The Central It Service Provider At The University Of Trier. As The Universitys Data Center, The Zimk Supports Over 10,000 Students And Around 2,000 Academic And Administrative Employees On A Central It Infrastructure. The Network Infrastructure Has A Highly Segmented, Conservative Architecture, With A Central Core Switch As A Router, Several Distributor Or Distribution Switches In The Buildings, Branch Offices And Central Server Rooms, As Well As Around 300 Access Switches And Access Points. Critical Data Streams Are Routed And Filtered Via A Central Security System, Which Also Provides Server Load Balancing. This System Is To Be Replaced By A New Security Solution That Integrates The Replaced Functions And Provides Additional, Modern Security Functions For All Network Areas. The Focus Is On A Next Generation Firewall (Ngfw), Again As A Highly Available/Redundant Hardware Appliance, With Appropriate Network Functions, Which Is Supposed To Take Over Central Routing.
