Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang has appealed to the public to avoid obstructing national highway projects in the state due to land disputes and compensation issues.
Speaking to the media after a four-day tour covering five districts—Phek, Kiphire, Shamator, Tuensang, and Mokokchung—from November 11, Zeliang, who also serves as the Minister in charge of National Highways, said he reviewed and assessed highway projects spanning approximately 750 kilometers in these areas.
Zeliang inspected ongoing projects and those recently completed, which are currently under the defect liability and maintenance period. During his tour, he emphasized the importance of public cooperation, particularly in matters of land acquisition, for the timely completion of national highway construction.
He pointed out that delays and project stalls often result from land acquisition and compensation-related issues. Highlighting the problem of inflated land claims, Zeliang noted the presence of illegal structures constructed near roads in anticipation of compensation.
“In Phek district alone, between 159 km to 173 km and 176 km to 206 km, hundreds of such unauthorized structures have been built. This is highly unethical and can lead to delays or even the cancellation of project sanctions,” he said.
Zeliang urged stakeholders to adhere to the land rates fixed by the state government and support the infrastructure development necessary for Nagaland’s progress. |
