This is the new underpass of the City of Buenos Aires.
The City of Buenos Aires is carrying out work on a new underpass that is already underway: it responds to a long-standing demand from residents, although it is worth mentioning that it will not be for cars. What is this new work about?
This brand new construction will be carried out in a Buenos Aires neighborhood in Commune 12, more precisely in Villa Pueyrredón. It is a new tunnel under the tracks, next to an avenue, which aims to improve traffic, although it will not be intended for vehicles.

This project, a historic request from the residents, will take place at the intersection of Avenida del Fomentista and the Mitre train tracks, where the José León Suárez branch operates, in Villa Pueyrredón. There is already a vehicular tunnel there, which has a narrow pedestrian crossing. According to the information provided, the City aims to create another similar, exclusive passage, which will improve the flow of traffic and improve pedestrian safety in the area.
In this way, when the two works are finished, there will be two tunnels: the first one, the historic one, which is currently used for cars and motorcycles, will be widened and will have two lanes and a two-way lane. The second one, the new one, will be a few meters away and will be made thanks to the use of a railway space that is no longer in use, and will be exclusively for pedestrians.
The Buenos Aires City government stated that this project “will represent a definitive segregation of vehicular traffic, pedestrians and the railway crossing.” At the same time, and “in pursuit of road safety,” it will also provide “greater train flow.” “In addition, it will promote the urban integration of the area and its revitalization,” they indicated.

The project, which already has a call for tenders underway, includes a series of works to be carried out in the area. In addition to the intervention of the sidewalks and streets, new public spaces will be created and the execution of the work.
The Minister of Infrastructure of Buenos Aires, Pablo Bereciartua, said that this is “a fundamental work to improve pedestrian safety and road coexistence on Fomentista Avenue”, which “today represents a risk for those who travel on foot or by bicycle in this area”. “These are small-scale works, but with a great impact on the neighbourhood and community and which resolve historical complaints that have persisted”, he concluded.
