Work Detail | If you’re in for the latest plug in hybrid model from BMW you’ll need to relocate to China, the only market – for now – for the new X1 xDrive 25 Le iPerformance. Yes, it’s a long and tiresome name and it took longer to write than to read – but it’s the one attributed to the latest green crossover from Germany. Actually it’s from China, because BMW Brilliance will be in charge of manufacturing, and it’s going to be sold in the People’s Republic as the ‘X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance,’. The car is debuting at the Chengdu Motor Show 2016 and will be the very first plug-in hybrid in the compact luxury SUV segment. The new plug in has a turbocharged three-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine mounted at the front paired to an electric motor sitting in the back. The ICE (internal combustion engine) has 134 horsepower (100 kilowatts) and 162 pound-feet (220 Newton-meters) of torque and will deliver the power via a six-speed box, while the electric motor packs up to 94 hp (70 kW) and an instant torque of 122 lb-ft (165 Nm). The total combined power stands at 284 lb-ft (385 Nm), good for a 62 mph sprint in 7.4 seconds, with the crossover able to reach up to 75 mph (120 km/h) while in the fully electric mode. BMW claims the fuel economy of the model stands in at 1.8 liters / 100 km (130 mpg) in the combined cycle and the electric range stands in at 37 miles (60 km) when using the 10.7-kWh lithium battery. A full recharge takes 3.7 hours or 2.9 hours to reach 80%. The X1 xDrive25Le iPerformance looks exactly like the regular long-wheelbase X1, another China-only model. We can see the added cap on the front-left fender and a discreet “i” logo. BMW said the lug-in hybrid can also be had with optional Cross Country and Sport packages. |
