Reinforced-Concrete Structures – Dike Works In Wetteren - Kwatrecht Zone 2 & 4. Instabilities Occur Along The Right Bank Of The Scheldt In Kwatrecht And Wetteren. The Existing Banks Are Sagging And Sliding. The Main Cause For These Instabilities Can Be Found In The Presence Of The Member Of Merelbeke. This Is A Soft Clay Layer Which Is Several Meters Thick On Parts Of The Right Bank. The Works Are Situated In 2 Distinct Zones As Sketched Below On The Aerial Photographs: - Zone 2: From Kennof Company To Kwatrechtsteenweg 108 - Zone 4: From Aardeken To Zuiderdijk 25 The Stabilization Consists On The One Hand Of Inserting Steel Profiles In Order To To Stabilize The Slope And On The Other Hand To Renew The Erosion Protection Of The Toe And The Bank Of The Slope. This So-Called Nailing Ensures That More Shear Resistance Is Added In The Potential Sliding Surfaces, Which Increases The Overall Safety With Regard To Sliding. The Nailing With Discrete Piles Has The Additional Advantage That The Groundwater Flow To The Scheldt Is Not Prevented. In Addition To Stabilization, A Sigmakering Up To 8M Taw Must Also Be Constructed To Prevent Flooding During Storm Tides. For This Purpose, The Existing Flood Defense Must Be Increased From Approximately 7.5M Taw To 8.0M Taw. Furthermore, The Construction Of A Concrete Jetty At The Kennof Company Is Planned, Which Will Be Connected To The Public Road And The Company Itself.
